Perhaps moviegoers are just getting tired of the same ol’ schtick.
Michael Moore’s latest documentary, “Fahrenheit 11/9,” is not doing well at the box office. In its opening weekend, the anti-President Trump movie was set to earn just $3 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
That would put the film at eighth place for the weekend. On Friday, the day it debuted, the movie brought in just $1 million from more than 1,700 screens. The film was projected to haul in $5 million to $8 million.
For comparison, Moore’s biggest hit movie — “Fahrenheit 9/11,” also an anti-Republican president movie — opened in 2004 with a near $24 million haul in its first weekend.
To put it all into perspective, “The House With A Clock In Its Walls,” a kids movie, looked set to haul in $25 million, easily the weekend’s big winner.
“Fahrenheit 11/9” was applauded by critics, winning an 81% “certified fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But critics who disliked the movie called it “disjointed,” “lazy,'” and “abhorrently self-promoting.”
“Even by the lowest of low Moore standards ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ is an abomination. When the film settles down and peddles generic socialist propaganda you can’t trust what he’s saying. It’s like hearing a deranged man’s rant and noticing a few syllables seem coherent. … It’s hard to imagine any clear-eyed liberal seeing ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ as anything other than a garbage dump of lies, misdirection and cartoonishly dumb arguments against both Trump and the American experiment,” wrote critic Christian Toto.
Moore was hoping to cash in on Trump-haters — and he even vowed that he’d move to Canada if things went awry following the release of his film.
But Moore is really looking at more dismal returns, like his last movie, “Michael Moore in TrumpLand,” which grossed just $149,000.
